Pontius Pilate features large in the New Testament account of the trial and crucifixion of Jesus but the only surviving contemporary record of him outside the Bible is this inscription, found in Caesarea in 1961. It is a particularly significant archaeological find as it is an authentic 1st-century Roman inscription which confirms what was known of his career from Biblical and Jewish sources.
